Job Search After 50: Why Job Boards Are a Trap

Lauren McDonald

Age Discrimination Is Built Into the System

“Age discrimination is so pervasive that people don’t even recognize it’s illegal.” — AARP

The job search has changed dramatically for brilliant folks over 50. You feel it, don’t you? You’ve spent decades building a career, yet now when you apply for jobs, you’re met with silence. No calls. No interviews. Just crickets.”

You’ve spent decades building a career, gaining experience and proving your value to yourself and companies you work(ed) for. Something changed though because when you apply for jobs, you’re not hearing back from anyone. No calls. No interviews. Just crickets. If you’ve followed me for any length of time on LinkedIn, you know that I’m in my 50s. Hard to believe, right? (You’re right, Laur!) But let’s cut to the chase because the moment you enter your late 40’s it sounds like the the hiring process shifts against you. Suddenly job boards don’t work the way they used to and I’ve been recruiting since before job boards even existed! For you it might feel like patterns are starting to emerge and your frustration is building:

  • Job boards waste your time
  • Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) filter you out before a human sees your resume
  • Companies use words like “overqualified” as code for too expensive

This isn’t bad luck and it’s not your skill set. You didn’t do anything wrong. It’s a deliberate system designed to weed out experienced job seekers before they even have a chance. It’s called age discrimination and it’s a vile attack on you after you work your heart out for companies and you should be in your prime money making years.

Why Job Boards Set You Up to Fail

If you’re over 50 and spending hours applying on job boards, you’ve noticed something frustrating after you hit “submit”:

  • No phone calls
  • No interviews
  • Just radio silence

You apply and nothing happens. Weeks pass without a single response. You start thinking it’s you. You start to think that you’re broken. YOU”RE NOT BROKEN. There’s NOTHING WRONG WITH YOU. While you’re feeling this way ALONG WITH hundreds of thousands of people daily, companies continue collecting thousands of applications. The system is designed to consume your time while offering zero transparency. Every application takes anywhere from 10 to 45 minutes to complete of your time and most companies don’t even bother to send a rejection email. You simply never hear from anyone. Today I spoke with a brilliant woman who told me that each application took her 3 to 4 hours to fill out because she would do research on each company and a more detailed process. This is bonkers!

Do they know how dehumanizing this process is? Yes, of course they do. Do they care? Nope, they don’t care at all. They sleep well at night meanwhile people are drinking themselves silly because they are so depressed and confused after hearing nothing for weeks and months.

This is NOT right. This is why I share a few times a week (and sometimes daily) on LinkedIn. I am SCREAMING this (yes CAPS) from the rooftops to get everyone’s attention. Am I alone in this? Maybe. I own my company and I’m not going to pretend this is ok. THIS IS NOT OK and those who work for companies read my posts and know I’m onto them.

It’s Not You. It’s the System.

Thousands of brilliant people over 50 are stuck in this rigged hiring machine. It’s humiliating for all of these people who are moms, daughter, daughters, sons, grandparents, aunts, uncles and friends. I could list every relationship her but you get my vibe. You’ve built an incredible career. Then suddenly you’re sitting applying to jobs and feeling invisible and you think how did I arrive here? How is it that your skill set offers no value and you’re applying for jobs like you did when you were a teenager. In fact we didn’t even have to do this – we went IN PERSON to find jobs. This is new and it’s set up for humans to fail and screen out those over 50. Isn’t that supposedly illegal? I guess it’s who you ask and how you prove it. Note for a disclaimer at the bottom of the post (but first, keep reading!)

At first you assume it’s just bad luck or the timing of your job search. Maybe it’s summer you think? But remember this happens every week of the years – every season – on the weekdays and weekends. After submitting dozens of applications the doubt starts creeping in. “Was it always this bad, you think?” Maybe those neighbors, friends from college and your cousin who struggled to land a job weren’t the problem. Maybe you were critical of them and now that you’re in a search you’re more compassionate because this is the PITS you think! Maybe it wasn’t their lack of charisma or qualifications. Maybe they were right – maybe this doesn’t make sense and companies are using this to waste your time.

Here’s the reality: Job boards are not built for experienced folks. Instead they prioritize entry-level and mid-career roles. The system is designed for volume over value. They filter out “seasoned” candidates for their roles long before a human ever reviews their resume.

The ATS Black Hole

Job boards don’t “see” you. They scan and scam you. The second you upload your resume, an Applicant Tracking System (ATS) assigns it a ranking based on rigid keyword filters. A human rarely looks at it. No hiring manager has access to an ATS where they are able to assess your skill set. They’re forbidden from viewing your resume. It just sits somewhere on a server that companies use to store millions of these resumes. It’s sheer lunacy.

Why is this a disaster for job seekers over 50?

  • You get labeled “overqualified,” which is corporate-speak for “too expensive”
  • The algorithm ignores the depth of your experience and what you “bring to the table”
  • Resumes listing work experience over 15 years old are often filtered out

Meanwhile those who are younger and less experienced candidates can game the system. They shove their resumes with buzzwords and lowball their salary expectations. They copy and paste the job descriptions into their resumes before they upload with key words. Companies prefer them because they cost less even if they bring far less to the table. The result of this nonsense? Brilliant humans with great experience and knowledge are dismissed before they even get a shot. All because they’re older and wiser. Isn’t that what companies want? I guess not.

Job Boards Are an Ageism Machine

Companies don’t want to pay for experience. The moment you apply the system starts working against you. This isn’t an accident –  it’s a deliberate strategy created by people with the title of “Human Resources” – these people do not care about Humans. Their title should be Corporate Resources. Employers use ATS filters to eliminate senior candidates before the hiring process even begins. What’s even worse? Many job postings aren’t real to begin with.

The Dirty Secret: Most Jobs on Job Boards Don’t Exist

Companies use job boards for data collection (disturbing I know!):

  • Some post fake openings just to build a resume database for future needs (backfilling)
  • Others gauge the talent pool before deciding whether they even want to hire (this is very popular)
  • Many comply with corporate policies requiring public job postings·even when they already have an internal candidate (this is “lets see what’s out there before we extend the offer to the current employee)

CNBC reports that over 40% of job postings on major job boards are ‘phantom jobs” These roles either don’t either don’t exist or were posted just for optics. To me, this is infuriating.

Translation?

You are wasting your time.Time is money even more when you’re looking for a job. Companies don’t care about that – companies only care about profits and how to lay people off with very little severance. They simply don’t care about anything and will do whatever it takes to drive profit margins. Employees are collateral damage so imagine how they treat the potential job interviewees. In a word, horrific.

The Numbers Don’t Lie: Job Boards Have a 2% Success Rate

Corporate job postings receive hundreds and thousands of applications in an hour.

  • 250+ applications per role (a low estimate because I’ve seen thousands)
  • 80% of jobs never even make it to job boards because they’re filled internally
  • Less than 2% of applicants land an interview through job board submissions.

If you’ve applied to 100+ jobs with no response it’s not you. You ddi nothing wrong. It’s the system and it’s created by people who care so little about human beings yet require hiring them so their businesses can function. It’s backward, it’s disturbing and they know no one can stop them.

Job Boards Make You Look Desperate

Beyond being a colossal waste of time, job boards hurt your professional image.

Executives and high performers avoid them. Why? Because relying on job boards signals desperation.

Hiring managers assume that the best candidates get recruited through referrals. Job board applicants are their last priority.

According to Inc. Magazine,
“The best jobs are not advertised. If you see it on a job board, it’s either already filled or flooded with competition.”

Translation?

If you’re relying on job boards, you’re positioning yourself as the last resort.

So What Do You Do Instead?

If you’re tired of screaming into the void and getting ignored, it’s time for a different approach.

I’ve studied this system for over 25 years. I’ve worked inside it, leading recruiting teams at three major companies. I know exactly how it operates—and I know how to beat it.

Here’s the truth: You cannot rely on job boards. They’re designed to filter you out but not help you.

If you want real results, you need to stop playing by their rules.

Final Thought: Stop Letting Them Waste Your Time

Companies (let’s be honest here: humans comprise the companies and these folks are in HR) laugh at job seekers who believe job postings are legitimate. They want you exhausted. They want you defeated. They want you to give up.

The question is: Are you going to let them win? Stick with me and never let them know you read this post.
